It began with a post on the social media sharing site Reddit. Daniel Craft was a lifelong “Star Trek” fan. However, he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. So, days before he passed away, he made a plea, asking director J.J. Abrams and the folks at Bad Robot to screen a rough cut of the upcoming sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness.” The message, from his friend Grady Hendrix: “My friend is dying. Would like to see the new Star Trek movie. Please help. At the least, upvote to get to front page for someone else to see. Please.” (You can see the full message from his wife over on Reddit.) Hendrix and the fan’s wife had originally gotten Craft out to the theater to see the nine-minute preview of the film currently being shown before “The Hobbit.” Unfortunately, the sneak peek never ended up screening. Soon, movie sites around the internet were picking up Craft’s story. Eventually, word made its way to Abrams, who was able to show the “Star Trek” fanatic a rough cut of the film, right before he passed away, at the age of 41. "A day or so after the thread began, Paige, Dan’s wife, got a voicemail from JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof that was very nice and very straightforward: a producer for the movie would get in touch with them,” Hendrix wrote in a follow-up post on Reddit (via the Hollywood Reporter). “The next day, one of the film’s producers showed up at the door of their apartment with a DVD containing a very rough cut of Star Trek: Into Darkness in his hands. Paige had made popcorn, Dan had spent the previous day resting so he could sit through the movie, and after signing about 200 non-disclosure agreements they watched the film and had a blast.” You can read more about the story over on Reddit and THR.
