Tobe Hooper's original 1974 Texas Chain Saw Massacre is so gross you can smell it. (And Gunnar Hansen, who played Leatherface, never washed his costume during filming so the set was notoriously pungent.) It's grainy, lean, incredibly designed and ingeniously evokes way more carnage than it actually shows. But my favorite thing about it is how fucking disgusting even the non-murdery parts are, like the conversation with the repulsive slaughterhouse-working hitchhiker, who's picked up around the 10:15 mark in the video above. Maybe the most nauseating thing about the film is the extended headcheese discourse. (Fun fact: Headcheese was the film's working title. Funner fact: Headcheese Discourse is my memoir's working title.) Happy Halloween, even though it feels especially weird and fucked up this year. -Rich
